There can be only so much volume in the namespace. I don't want to have to trawl through a gigantic disambiguation page for, say, Paul Simon, when I want the politician, not the musician, not the dog of the guy who lives next door, not somebody's imaginary friend...you get the idea? There's a reason why What Wikipedia is not exists. As for sensible URLs, that has been suggested before, but is technically unfeasible because other, hidden, pages and directories exist on the site.
